One might think the penny has lost its power in today's economy. Those in the Cullman area, however, have found that a few pennies can make a real impact on education.

Through a giving program known as Operation Round Up, residents of Cullman County have donated approximately $2 million to educational projects - and they've done it a few pennies at a time.

"Cullman Electric Cooperative brought the program to our members in 1993," says Grady Smith, President and CEO of Cullman Electric Cooperative. "By allowing us to round up their power bills to the next whole dollar, participating members donate an average of 50 cents per month to the Operation Round Up trust fund. That doesn't seem like a lot of money at first glance, but it adds up fast when thousands of people join the effort."
